Serving and Supporting Our Local Region

At CONSOL Energy, we take seriously the role we
can play in improving the life of communities where we operate and
where our employees and their families live. Whether providing a
grant to the local 4-H Club or gathering employees to help build a
playground, we recognize the importance of being active
participants in the social fabric of our hometowns.
We strive to be involved in activities that enjoy wide community
support and that benefit the most people, and specifically focus
our efforts in the areas of public safety, youth organizations,
community organizations, as well as arts and culture.
Each year, CONSOL Energy donates more than 6 million dollars, as
well as time and resources to help improve and grow the communities
we serve.
From new equipment to help promote public safety, to programs
that encourage rural high school students to pursue graduation, our
mission is to become a vital part of the communities where we are
located.
In addition to our conservation efforts, CONSOL Energy is
constantly looking for new ways to incorporate environmental
stewardship into our day-to-day operations. For example, we
developed techniques to extract coalbed-methane from coal seams
prior to mining. This process limits the amount of gases released
into the air, and it also makes our mining operations safer and
more productive. We're also able to capture and sell that gas for
energy use.
CONSOL also participates in several reforestation projects with
organizations such as Ducks Unlimited and the National Wild Turkey
Federation. In fact, in 2007, the company was awarded the
Appalachian Regional Reforestation Initiative's Excellence in
Forestry Award for its work at Fola Surface Mine 6. CONSOL planted
more than four million trees on the property through various
reclamation efforts and other events. The mine also received the
West Virginia Foresters Association Excellence in Forestry Award in
2008.
A Christmas Party to Remember

Mattie Christian, Hurley Community Development - Knox Food Pantry;
Nancy Johnson, CONSOL Energy Human Resources Coordinator; Clara
Beller, Buchanan Community Food Pantry; and Ralph Mullins, Good
Samaritan Food Pantry.
The annual Christmas party at CONSOL Energy's Buchanan mine
helped make Christmas a little merrier for four food pantries in
Buchanan and Tazewell counties in Virginia. As part of their
celebration - employees brought in canned goods or donations. By
the time it was over... some 16 boxes of food and more than $1,000
in donations had been collected. CONSOL Energy chipped in an
additional $500 for each of the four food pantries as a corporate
donation.
