CONSOL Innovations is using coal’s unique chemistry to innovate high-performance advanced materials in aerospace, military, energy storage, building materials, and other high-technology applications, propelling our modern society into greater efficiencies and levels of sustainability.
A high-performance carbon material made from coal
CFOAM® is just one example of the advanced materials CONSOL Innovations is developing to leverage the properties of coal to meet the needs of future-facing applications. An ideal material for aerospace tooling, CFOAM can be easily machined into complex shapes and has a very low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE)—like monolithic graphite and Invar, both of which cost much more—that matches the CTE of the carbon fiber parts molded and cured using CFOAM.
CFOAM also exhibits an attractive combination of properties–including low density, heat and fire resistance, corrosion resistance, high strength-to-weight ratio, and electromagnetic shielding capabilities–that make it suitable for a range of applications in aerospace, military, and other industrial and commercial product markets. Today, certain components of some of our highest-performance aircraft and spacecraft are made using CFOAM tools made from coal.

With its breakthrough anode material, Obsidia, C-BATT is working to solve the ongoing performance and supply chain issues that are severely limiting the electrification movement. Coal Plastic Composites
Improving sustainability with carbon-based building materials
Over the next century, the huge demand for new construction and infrastructure buildout around the world will present a daunting challenge. CONSOL Innovations is addressing these challenges through the research and development of innovative solutions that use abundant coal and waste coal resources as a feedstock for manufacturing sustainable, carbon-based building products.
By combining coal by-products with recycled plastics, we are developing processes to manufacture high-performance, low-cost, and aesthetically pleasing building products such as coal plastic composite decking. These products offer an improved sustainability profile compared to traditional materials like pressure-treated lumber, while still meeting all international building codes.
Carbon Management Technologies
Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS)—plus new methane reduction technologies—are ways of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. CONSOL Innovations remains active in multiple U.S. Department of Energy-sponsored research, development, and demonstration projects to boost the environmental benefits and commercial viability of these technologies.
